The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll70 km (43 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep.It was formed during several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000; 66,000; 60,000; and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded. The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage Site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),More info:wiki

Comprising 22 dives in just over two weeks, the Blue Hole Belize expedition was an attempt to journey to the bottom of the world’s largest sinkhole – Lighthouse Reef – in order to produce a complete 3D sonar map of the waters, and to catalogue the geological makeup of the region.

Narrator: There’s a massive underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize that extends 125 meters into the Earth’s crust. It’s called the Great Blue Hole. Scuba divers and snorkelers have been cruising the surface waters for decades, but few have dared to venture deeper and explore what lies beyond the blackness.

In the winter of 2018, a crew from Aquatica Submarines started their descent to the bottom of the Blue Hole. Their mission was to create a 3D map of the sinkhole’s interior, but along the way, they came across some common and not-so-common sights.

As the crew started, they found the usual suspects: reef sharks, turtles, and giant corals. But as they pushed 90 meters, life started to vanish. The culprit was a thick layer of toxic hydrogen sulfide spanning the width of the entire sinkhole like a floating blanket.

Sometimes known as the Great Blue Hole, the Belize Blue Hole is a gorgeous natural phenomenon located inside the lagoon of the Lighthouse Atoll approximately 43 miles off the coast of Belize City. Measuring more than 300 meters (980 feet) across and 100 meters (350 feet) across, the Blue Hole is an almost perfectly circular body of deep blue water that was created more than 15,000 years ago when water levels rose in the Caribbean at the end of the Ice Age.

Beyond the natural beauty of this unique water body, Blue Hole is popular with divers thanks to its complex underwater experience. Rated by Jacques Cousteau as one of his Top 10 favorite diving sites in the world, descending into the Blue Hole begins by reaching a limestone shelf approximately six meters (18 feet) below the water’s surface. From there, divers orient themselves to drop off into a very dark abyss where not much can be seen beyond the limestone wall of the periphery of the Belize Blue Hole.

“Charles Darwin described it as “the most remarkable reef in the West Indies,” a statement that still rings true today. Forming part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, this underwater World Heritage Site is home to a cornucopia of marine life, including 500 species of fish and 106 species of coral. The jewel in its crown, though, is the Great Blue Hole, a large submarine sinkhole that attracts divers and snorkelers from around the world”, asserts the article which was published on the travel section of Thefrontierpost.com.
