The Twelve Apostles (Victoria) | Most Beautiful Tour

The Twelve Apostles is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia.

Their proximity to one another has made the site a popular tourist attraction. Seven of the original eight stacks remain standing at the Twelve Apostles viewpoint, after one collapsed in July 2005. Though the view from the promontory by the Twelve Apostles never included twelve stacks, additional stacks—not considered part of the Apostles group—are located to the west within the national park,More info:wiki

Witness the rugged splendour of the famous 12 Apostles, magnificent rock stacks that rise up majestically from the Southern Ocean on Victoria’s dramatic coastline.

Limestone cliffs

Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland beginning 10–20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs.

The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 metres high were left isolated from the shore. View the 12 Apostles at sunrise and sunset as they change colour from dark and foreboding in shadow to brilliant sandy yellow under a full sun.

How to get there

The 12 Apostles are located 275 kilometres west of Melbourne, approximately a four-hour drive along the Great Ocean Road.

About 240 kilometers long, winding almost its entire length right along the coast, the Great Ocean Road was built in the 1920s to provide work for Australian veterans of the Great War. The road is actually a war memorial, part of the National Heritage List of outstanding natural, historic and Indigenous places.

We get away early from Warrnambool, and it’s only a short drive to the start of The Great Ocean Road. It takes about a half hour to reach the sea, and initially we’re unimpressed as the first two views we look in on are unsigned, with small parking areas, and one requires a long walk in to the lookout. But then we arrive at Loch Ard Gorge, named after a ship that foundered there many years ago with only two survivors, who were swept into the gorge and then somehow scaled these cliffs to find help. Stunning sandstone cliffs enclose small coves, with the surf breaking at the entrances. There is lots of parking, well-constructed paths and stairways, and lots of signing explaining the site.

Back in 2000 a friend of mine was going to Melbourne, Australia for business.  On a spur of the moment, I decided to ‘tag along’.  I use the term lightly, since we traveled at different times and I wasn’t working.  I would be busy having fun during the day doing my own thing.  And there is plenty to do in Melbourne, but the letter M has already been taken.

On the one day they had free, I planned a trip on the Great Ocean Road.  When I told another friend I was going, the first thing she said to me was that I had to travel the Great Ocean Road to see the Twelve Apostles, since reduced to eight.

The road itself traverses 151 miles from Torquay to Warrnambool, west of Melbourne.  It is the world’s largest war memorial, built between 1919 and 1932, and dedicated to the casualties of World War I.  Yes, Australia fought in that war, too.
