(In 2003 Etta James was honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award(opens in a new tab). The following tribute ran in the GRAMMY Awards program book that year. James died Jan. 20 at the age of 73.)

“I sing what I feel — R&B, blues, gospel, and rock and roll, the music that came out of the South,” Etta James proudly declares. “That’s the music that I have always believed in.”

No wonder every number Etta has chosen to perform during her 49-year career has seemed like an act of faith. Whether she’s growled with womanly desire on her earliest hit “The Wallflower” (aka “Roll With Me Henry”) (a feminist anthem well before the term feminism was common), soared like a swooning angel over the billowing clouds of strings in her timeless ballad “At Last,” cried the blues with shattering eloquence in “I’d Rather Go Blind” or taken possession of the songs of Billie Holiday for her GRAMMY-winning 1994 album Mystery Lady — Songs Of Billie Holiday, Etta has won our hearts by putting her own into every captivating syllable.

Her career had its ups and downs: she suffered from a heroin addiction, kidney problems, and in later years, dementia, but as Here and Now pop culture critic Renee Graham told Robin Young, this was an extraordinary woman who even as a teenager had a full-grown sound.

Renee says that James’ music is full of a tension and drama that eludes many contemporary singers.

In 1997, then Vibe Editor in Chief Danyel Smith sent me to the Sofitel in midtown Manhattan to interview Etta James. Etta was preparing to release her 19th studio album Love’s Been Rough On Me. She’d also completed the interviews with David Ritz that would become her 1998 collaborative autobiography, “Rage To Survive.” She was self-conscious of her appearance, she was still holding onto weight she’d eventually lose, but she acknowledged she was insecure about it aloud and proceeded to disarm me with a story from her early days as a teenage rising star.
