Of the 33 records that Hank Williams placed on Billboard country and western Top 10 charts during his short lifetime, only two made the mainstream pop chart, and even those had much to do with pop artists like Tony Bennett having their own hits with them first. Yet, more than 60 years after his premature death at age 29, no country artist living or dead can approach the familiarity the general public has with Hank Williams, whose sad, lonely songs are playing right this minute on some roadhouse jukebox. Few musical legends live on as an almost touchable, feelable presence in the anatomy of modern popular music as does the enigmatic, goofy-looking guy who carried a nascent country music formula to its full potential, then exited stage right in total and abject loneliness.

#6       Tom Hiddleston: playing Hank Williams was like riding a very complicated bike,More info:theverge

Tom Hiddleston looks like country singer Hank Williams. They’re both tall, pale, lean men with narrow faces, sharp noses, and easy country smiles that don’t entirely warm up their thousand-yard stares. Looking at pictures or footage of the two of them, the resemblance is clear enough. But Hiddleston was still an odd choice to play Williams in the biopic I Saw The Light, which opens in theaters on Friday, April 1st. Given an opportunity to cast someone to play an Alabama-born country singer-songwriter, one of the original good ol’ boys of Tennessee’s Grand Ole Opry, most people wouldn’t look to a London-born, Cambridge-educated classical actor who’s best known for playing a campy, villainous Norse god in a series of American comic-book blockbusters.

#2       ESPN is bringing back Hank Williams Jr. to ‘Monday Night Football,’ for some reason,More info:sbnation

ESPN is bringing back Hank Williams Jr. for its Monday Night Football opening, according to Cindy Watts of USA Today. The move comes six years after Williams was dropped from the broadcast following comments he made about John Boehner golfing with Barack Obama.

Stephanie Druley, ESPN’s vice president of events and studio production, says she expects there will be some backlash, but ESPN is comfortable with it.

“It was the right time,” Druley said. “We discussed it internally and it was just the right time to bring him back.”

Williams recorded a new version of “All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night,” complete with the well-known opening, “Are you ready for some football?”

ESPN jettisoned Williams after he said some controversial things on Fox News’ Fox & Friends about Boehner golfing with Obama.

#1       Texas Musician Captures the Spirit of Hank Williams in Film,More info:texasstandard

“I Saw The Light” is a new biopic about the life of Hank Williams. Texas musician Rodney Crowell is executive music producer – a role that included training the actor who would play the ill-fated country star in the film.

For five weeks, English actor Tom Hiddleston, perhaps best known in the U.S. for his roles in “The Avengers” and “Thor,” lived in the upstairs suite of Rodney Crowell’s home near Nashville.

Texas Standard host David Brown spoke to Crowell about the film, and how he helped a classically-trained British actor transform into an outlaw musician.

“One day I had to go upstairs – (Hiddleston) was staying in a bedroom upstairs – I went up to knock on the door, and the door opened there stood Hank Williams,” Crowell says. “It wasn’t Tom Hiddleston, it was a character. … He crawled inside that skin.”
