Joni Mitchell | A Greatest Singer

  • Roberta Joan “Joni” Mitchell, CC (née Anderson; born November 7, 1943) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Drawing from folk, pop, rock, and jazz, Mitchell’s songs often reflect social and environmental ideals as well as her feelings about romance, confusion, disillusionment, and joy. She has received many accolades, including nine Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Rolling Stone called her “one of the greatest songwriters ever”,[2]and AllMusic has stated, “When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century”,More info:wiki

“A bit of a disaster” is how Joni Mitchell described an out-of-control August afternoon in 1970, when she gave a courageous performance at England’s Isle of Wight Festival. Watching Both Sides Now: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970, a new documentary by Oscar-winning director Murray Lerner, one sees how Mitchell tamed an agitated audience with a few fresh songs, a wide smile and a couple of astringent reprimands.

At the end of only her third song, Mitchell became frustrated with the rowdy crowd. “It really puts me up tight and I forget the words and I get nervous,” she pleaded. “It’s really a drag, and so I don’t know what to say. So just give me a little help, will you?”

Joni Mitchell had had enough. One more record, she thought, and that’d be it. Goodbye, rock & roll. So long, jazz. Hello, brushes and paints and canvases and a life of art.

Then she remembered that she’d been making similar threats for 10 years, and she had to laugh. Joni Mitchell has been fighting an uneasy battle with fame for a decade and a half now, and when her latest bout of retirement fever eased, she went out and signed a brand-new five-year contract. So much for retirement.

But Joni Mitchell turns 40 next year, and that gives her latest threats new resonance. We’re dealing with a charter member of– – hell, a spokeswoman for– – the Woodstock generation, the kids who venerated youth with a vengeance. Pop music at 40? It’s a question mark.

Singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell performs onstage during the finale of Turner Network Television’s ‘All-Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell’ at the Hammerstein Ballroom 06 April, 2000 in New York City. The event featured numerous singers and musicians performing Mitchell songs.

A roster of stars including Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones and Chaka Khan is featured on a compilation album celebrating the 75th birthday of Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.

In November, a host of musicians, friends of Mitchell and fans gathered for a special tribute concert in Los Angeles on the occasion of the iconic singer’s birthday. That concert was recorded and is being released next month as “The Music Center Presents Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration.”

To singer Brandi Carlile, Joni Mitchell is “the most revolutionary songwriter alive.”

To Rufus Wainwright, she’s the “ultimate communicator of inner feelings,” while jazz keyboardist Diana Krall has special awe for her skills as a piano player. “On top of all of her other talents, the musicianship in her songs is extraordinary,” she says.

Small wonder these artists, and more, leapt at the chance to tackle Mitchell’s songs at two all-star tribute concerts to her, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in L.A. last November 6 and 7, the latter show timed with the legend’s 75th birthday. The concerts, which also featured Norah Jones, James Taylor, Seal, Graham Nash, and more, have now spawned a movie (in theaters Feb. 7) and an album (out March 8), both titled Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration.

When Joni Mitchell took the stage Saturday afternoon, August 29th 1970, the Isle of Wight Festival had already seen its share of tumult. The promoters created, at great expense, one of the era’s finest concert lineups, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Doors and many more.

Fences were broken down while a radical movement were pushing to declare the venture a free festival. All these artists played through what Joni termed “mountains of amplifiers” and could easily drown out any unruly audience. Joni, however, had only an acoustic guitar, a dulcimer, a piano., and her own singular voice.
