The NRG Astrodome, also known as the Houston Astrodome or simply the Astrodome, is the world’s first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium, located in Houston, Texas. Construction on the stadium began in 1962, and it officially opened in 1965. It served as home to the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB) from its opening in 1965 until 1999, and the home to the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1968 until 1996, and also the part-time home of the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1971 until 1975. Additionally, the Astrodome was the primary venue of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo from 1966 until 2002. When opened, it was named the Harris County Domed Stadium and was nicknamed the “Eighth Wonder of the World”,More info:wiki

Harris County Commissioners approved a plan to move forward with a major renovation project that could revitalize the Astrodome and prevent it from being demolished. The plan will turn the dome into a mixture of parking spaces, an event space and retail or hospitality.

The $105 million project would raise the floor of the Astrodome two levels and put 1,400 parking spaces underneath. County officials believe that would make the Dome suitable for festivals or conferences and usher in potential commercial uses in the more than 550,000 square feet that surrounds the core.

The vote signals a reversal of fate for the stadium, which many thought would be demolished after Harris County voters in 2013 rejected a $217 million bond proposal that would have paid for massive renovations to the Astrodome.

The stadium, which was home to the Oilers and Astros and hosted countless major sporting events, including four of boxing great Muhammad Ali’s fights, has sat vacant since being declared unfit for occupancy in 2009. In 2005, it housed refugees of Hurricane Katrina.

Although the overwhelming majority Houston Texans history isn’t directly connected to the Astrodome, the site as to which the current, succeeding facility in which NRG Stadium does have significant relevance.  The Harris County Commissioner’s court approving the renovation of the dome is a sound decision and here’s why.

The Houston Texans aging, next-door neighbor in the Astrodome will be getting a face-lift over the next two years after a smothering majority of the Harris County Commissioner’s Court passed legislation to fund the renovations of the 53-year-old building yesterday.

So how much is this project going to cost?  The package that was approved was for $105 million.  One-third of the funding will come from property tax revenues and the remaining 67 percent will come from hotel occupancy taxes and parking revenues that the county collects.

WE THOUGHT THIS WAS OVER, TOO. After more than a decade of bickering about its future, the 54-year-old Astrodome was supposedly saved—just a $105 million nip and tuck away from a second life as a multi-use event space and parking structure. Then Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo surfaced a little-known detail in a recent KUHF interview: “What I’m discovering is that the 105 [million] that was allocated is not enough to air-condition the building,” she said before explaining her intention to reevaluate the county’s plans put into motion by her predecessor, former county judge Ed Emmett. What exactly does that mean for the state of the Dome? Let’s break it down.

HOUSTON – Astrodome renovations were scheduled to begin after the Houston Rodeo, but it appears the project is still in the cleanup phase.

Harris County commissioners in February 2018 approved a $105 million plan that would repurpose and renovate the Astrodome.

The plan is to raise the Astrodome’s floor to create an underground parking garage and nine acres of open space, which is expected to be used for conferences, festivals and commercial space.

The original plan had construction starting in October 2018, but it was announced in September 2018 that work would not start until early 2019.

The Harris County engineering department said at that time that the construction was slated to begin after the 2019 Houston Rodeo.
