THE PROVIDENCE LIBRARY COMPANY WAS founded in 1753 by a group of Providentians who wanted to read but could not afford to have books shipped from Europe on their own. Before the city had a public lending library, this organization gave members access to the world through shared books for a small fee. The company eventually set up shop in the Athenaeum (named for Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom) in 1836. It’s been an institution ever since.

Don’t be daunted by the neoclassical columns and name. The Athenaeum, or “the Ath” as some of its regulars know it, is for everyone. On any given day, anyone can drop in and browse the stacks, which include gems like the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass (containing notes in Walt Whitman’s own handwriting), an 1830s book on astronomy, and a Regency-era book of boys’ entertainments.

Fashion comes and goes, history stays put.

The Athenaeum, on Piccadilly, is part of the quiet old guard of London luxury, one of those five-star hotels with a name that everyone half-recognises for no particular reason. Once owned by the Rank Organisation, guests today walk the same halls Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando did (Kim Kardashian too, to bring things up to date).

Recently thoroughly renovated, they’ve partnered with The Galvin Brothers, Chris and Jeff, to look after the hotel’s catering – all of it, every last plateful, from breakfast through to supper and round through the night. This must, then, surely be some of the finest room service in London.

No appointment is necessary to visit the exhibition gallery on the first-floor, which delves into the history of buildings and design.

THE ATHENAEUM

Working to preserve our heritage while creating an environment that fuels creativity, ignites minds and renews dialogue between past and present

The Athenaeum has been extensively restored and refurbished  as one of nine national ‘Permanent Reminder’ projects of the 1916-2016 centenary commemorations. The Museum houses  County Wexford’s 1916 archive collection – artefacts and documents.

The Athenaeum was built first and foremost as a town hall and theatre. The theatre is in full operation with Enniscorthy Musical Society, Enniscorthy Drama Group and Wexford Studio Theatre staging productions as well as concerts and conferences.

In June 2017 the Athenaeum hosted its first wedding ceremony.  The theatre hall can accommodate 130 guests.  Flowers, drinks reception, tea & coffee can be included in the room hire price.
