Texas State Capitol | Favorite Architecture

The Texas State Capitol is the capitol building and seat of government of the American state of Texas. Located in downtown Austin, Texas, the structure houses the offices and chambers of the Texas Legislature and of the Governor of Texas. Designed in 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed from 1882 to 1888 under the direction of civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker. A $75 million underground extension was completed in 1993. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1986,More info:wiki

In 1882, Austin began construction of the Texas State Capitol because it thought the original capitol building, erected in 1853, too small. The six-year project hinted at the city’s grand hopes for its future.

The Capitol Land Board, which was in charge of overseeing the project, requested design submissions from architects all over the country who were up to the “monumental” challenge. Detroit architect Elijah E Meyer’s proposal was selected, with the condition that he modify the square dome into a circular one; he received West Texas land for his contribution.

The final project covered 22 acres (9 hectares) of land in downtown Austin, and today, many local businesses and high-rises border the building, as can be seen from bustling South Congress Avenue. The famous “sunset” red color of the building comes from the granite used on the exterior.

Recognized as one of the most distinguished and largest state capitols, the historic 100-year-old Texas State Capitol underwent a massive renovation, restoring it to its original state of grandeur. The exterior preservation and grounds restoration of the landmark building is one of the most prestigious projects completed by our firm.

The 360,000sf project was managed by the State Preservation Board, an entity created by the Governor of Texas for the total preservation of the State Capitol Building and Annex.

Like the national capitol, the Texas state capitol was once considered the “people’s house.” It used to be open almost all the time, with limited security. Security has been tightened in recent years, but the Texas state capitol still welcomes the public year-round. The easiest way to view the building is to pick up a brochure on the first floor and take a self-guided tour.

We’re all familiar with the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.: A white, domed icon of 19th-century neoclassical architecture with porticos and columns derived from ancient Greece and Rome.

And though it has been “built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored,” the U.S. Capitol building’s influence on government architecture can’t be overstated. Take a tour through the photos of state buildings or city halls throughout the country and you’ll see similar motifs.

But some of the most interesting—and, dare we say, the most beautiful—state capitol buildings in the U.S. aren’t exact replicas of the iconic one in Washington. Classical influences abound, of course, but capitol buildings from New York to Hawaii come in many different shapes and sizes. Ten state capitol buildings lack a dome, for example; a handful are built in the Art Deco style or with open-air courtyards; and many buildings aren’t white at all.

Eight people were arrested on Saturday as White Lives Matter protesters were confronted by counter-demonstrators supporting Black Lives Matter at the Texas State Capitol near where Gov. Greg Abbott had earlier dedicated a monument recognizing the contribution of African-Americans to the state.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Victor Taylor said four of the arrests were for assault, two for evading arrest, one for disorderly conduct and one for “interference with public duty.” Two of those arrested were on Capitol grounds and the others on adjacent streets.

More than 300 speakers – from national big shots like former Secretary of State John Kerry to policy wonks like Ann Beeson, CEO of the Center for Public Policy Priorities – will converge in Austin for the eighth annual Texas Tribune Festival Sept. 27-29.

What started as a largely Texan politics festival has grown far beyond the Lone Star State.

“It’s really become a national draw,” Texas Tribune Editor-in-Chief Emily Ramshaw told the Rivard Report last week. “There is so much national interest in Texas — and so much interest in Texas at what’s taking place on the national stage — that it only made sense to grow the festival for everyone.”
