For anyone that has ever held a zinc or copper plate in their hands and has experienced the thrill two metal plates hold as the starting points for one of the longest creative tradition, will for sure enjoy the story behind he thin metal. Here, we aim to bring to you all the secrets of the aquatint printmaking technique, its history, process, and some of the most celebrated pieces. The creation of such pieces, the original printed images that are hand-made, use a range of traditional techniques such as relief, intaglio, planographic, serigraphs, and monotypes^[1] yet today our focus is placed on a method of intaglio printing where the acid helps to create an effect of a water wash. This result is one of the reasons that the aquatint technique allows its lovers to not only produce fine art print editions, celebrated in the growing number of print fairs around the world, but to ‘dip’ into more commercial waters, such as illustrations and original book designs. Both to an extent dangerous and yet highly awarding, the discovery of such a method of production dates far back to 1768^[2] and you can imagine how rich its history is, so let us take you on its journey.

In the intaglio method of printing, we are talking about using a matrix which has the image below the surface.

When ready for printing, ink sits in the lines below the surface of the matrix, and pressure is applied using a rolling motion with an intaglio press, forcing the ink out of the inked lines in the matrix onto the paper.

The word intaglio comes from the Italian intagliare, to cut, and refers to the method of cutting, or incising, lines into a surface, to produce an image. Jewellers and sculptors had been using this method since antiquity, but it was not until the 1430’s in Western Europe that this technique was first applied to a flat piece of metal with the express purpose of transferring the image to paper.

In this post, I’ll be using an etched copper plate as the matrix to describe the intaglio printing process. The process of producing the actual matrix will be described in another post – this is a discussion of the basic printing process – however it is worth noting that the three main methods of producing an intaglio plate before 1600 were engraving, drypoint, and etching. Some of the equipment/method used will be modern, but this will be noted. However, in essence, the modern method is still very close to its 15th Century counterpart.

This Victorian reverse crystal intaglio link bracelet features an equestrian theme of a horse, a dog, and a jumper connected by 14 karat yellow gold links. The reverse crystal intaglio pieces consist of a rock crystal cabochon with an intaglio carved into the back and painted with oils in beautiful detail; this technique gives off a three-dimensional effect. The intaglio is then sealed with a mother-of-pearl backing.

The bracelet measures approximately 7.25 inches in length; 7 inches in diameter; 0.25 inches in depth and 1.25 inches in width at the widest point.
