For most people, the name Dion DiMucci brings to mind doo-wop and oldies music thanks to hits like “I Wonder Why,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Ruby Baby” and “Runaround Sue” that he had with and without his group The Belmonts. But in reality, the Bronx native has always had a deep and abiding love for roots music, a self-described obsession for him that kicked in the first time he heard it on the radio in his mother’s kitchen back when he was about 11. This love for country music and the blues not only manifested itself in recent projects like Son of Skip James, Bronx in Blue and the brand-new New York Is My Home, but when Dion was recording for Columbia Records back in the 1960s that wound up being mostly unreleased. While some of those sessions wound up resurfacing on the 1997 2-CD compilation The Road I’m On: A Retrospective, a 5- CD set called Kicking Child mostly made up of this kind of material remains unreleased to this day. The following are major influences that shaped Dion’s musical approach be it in the worlds of pop or otherwise.

#8   2003 NHL Re-Draft: Neon Dion Goes Fourth,More info:habseyesontheprize

Out of this whole draft class, there has probably not been a more discussed player than Dion Phaneuf. Dynamic offensively, middling defensively, thunderous bodychecker, and also one of the first young players to sign a big contract after his rookie deal expired. There’s been a lot of ink spilled and highlights flashed on Dion (and not just courtesy of his hair on draft day), making him a hot topic of discussion by fans and pundits alike. Early in his career, there were discussions about whether you’d rather build a team around Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, or Phaneuf as a dark horse candidate. So while it’s easy to view his career with a bit of a ‘but he isn’t THAT good’ attitude, in the end, he’s still very, very good.

#7   Atlanta United sign Dion Pereira from Watford,More info:dirtysouthsoccer

Atlanta United announced today the signing of 19-year old midfielder Dion Pereira after a transfer from Watford FC.

“We’re pleased to welcome Dion to the club and look forward to him joining the squad as we head into the 2019 season,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said in a statement. “We identified him as a young, technical player who we believe will adapt well to Atlanta United and MLS.”

Pereira has two Premier League appearances for Watford, both occurring in the final matches of Watford’s 2016-2017 season, against Leicester City and Manchester City. He was named Watford FC’s young player of the season in 2016-2017.

Pereira has spent the last three seasons playing primarily for Watford’s U-23 team in the Professional Development League. During the 2016-17 season he made 16 starts and 21 appearances and scored one goal. Pereira had a breakout year in 2017-18, as he started 27 of his 28 appearances and scored 13 goals. This season, he made eight starts in nine appearances before completing the move to join Atlanta for preseason.

#6   Mark Dion,More info:art21

Mark Dion was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1961. He received a BFA (1986) and an honorary doctorate (2003) from the University of Hartford, School of Art, Connecticut. Dion’s work examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world. “The job of the artist,” he says, “is to go against the grain of dominant culture, to challenge perception and convention.” Appropriating archaeological and other scientific methods of collecting, ordering, and exhibiting objects, Dion creates works that question the distinctions between “objective” (“rational”) scientific methods and “subjective” (“irrational”) influences.

#5   Dion Lee Costume Designer,More info:sydneydancecompany

Dion Lee collaborated with Rafael Bonachela on his work Emergence, that premiered in Sydney as part of De Novo in 2013.

Dion Lee has established himself as one of the most critically lauded and awarded fashion innovators to emerge from Australia in recent times. His status has been cemented by the international press with Fashion Wire Daily calling the designer’s premiere collection “the best debut by any designer on the planet this year”.

Lee’s first London Fashion Week show in September 2012 received a phenomenally positive response with Style.com commenting that “this collection was something of an engineering marvel, boasting three-dimensionally printed dresses and suits, the complex construction of which beggared the imagination”.

In addition to garnering recognition, Lee has also demonstrated considerable commercial nous, with the launch of Line II, a more accessible accompaniment to his main collections, focused primarily on shirting. The designer has also turned his hand to the high street, collaborating with respected Australian retailer Cue.
