Backstage at New York’s Ritz club in 1982, the soul singer Wilson Pickett managed to get himself stabbed in the hand by a Hell’s Angel. There was something about him — his bling, his aggression, his swaggering confidence, his ravenous womanising, his love of firearms — that seemed to rub people up the wrong way.
His band called him “the drill sergeant” or “the slave driver” and he settled arguments with his fists. He was given to wearing velvet hats and long mink coats and carried fat bankrolls of up to $10,000. His Thunderbird boat had “the Wicked Pickett” emblazoned on its rear and his Ferrari opened up its V12 engine only once it hit 100 miles an hour.
