Architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue (1869-1924) commissioned the young Hildreth Meière to decorate his yet unfinished Nebraska State Capitol and had approved her preliminary designs for the vestibule dome at the north entrance before his death in 1924.1 Meière continued to work with his successor firm, Bertram Goodhue Associates, later Mayers, Murray, & Phillip, on eight separate decorative commissions at the capitol in a variety of mediums.
The capitol was built and decorated in four stages around an earlier capitol building between 1922 and 1932 to save the cost of relocating workers to temporary offices during construction. The vestibule inside the north entrance of the cruciform building was built during the first phase of construction (1922-24). The foyer, rotunda and dome, and Senate Chamber were built during the second phase (1925-28). The tower was added to the rotunda during the third phase (1928-30). The west-center section of the capitol, including the House of Representatives, was completed during the fourth phase (1930-32).

BVH Architecture partnered with Wiss Janney Elstner in 1997 to provide historic preservation investigation and design services for an extensive multi-phase, multi-year restoration project of the entire exterior envelope of the Nebraska State Capitol. Designed by Bertram Goodhue in 1920, the building is a National Historic Landmark.
Initially, BVH/WJE conducted an extensive condition survey and investigation of the limestone masonry exterior, tower façade, tower window systems, gold tile dome, tile murals, roofs, and roof plazas. An extensive mapping of the deteriorated surface, mortar/stone analysis and window air infiltration testing was also performed. A condition survey report and multi-phase preservation plan were prepared and included the historical background of the construction, repairs and maintenance of the Capitol; an assessment of the existing conditions, including drawings and photographs; and prioritized recommendations for the maintenance and repair of the Capitol exterior, including a cyclical maintenance plan.

Named after Abraham Lincoln, the Nebraska State Capitol is a great place for people of all ages. Head to the top and take in the view of the city from the top of the 400-foot high tower of the Capitol building. It offers beautiful mosaic ceilings and floors, paintings and sculptures. One of the most famous objects is the 19-foot tall bronze statue that stands atop the Capitol. Take a tour on the hour any day of the week!

On August 30, 2011, the Tea Party Express held a rally on the steps of the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln. I took some time to explore the Capitol, where I marveled at the colorful, intricate ceramic and Venetian glass tile mosaic murals on the walls and ceilings, the marble tile floor and sculptures within. Three floor medallions represent the earth, plants, and animal life. In the arches around the circular ceiling, mosaics of the past, present, and future, activities of society and cultures are represented.
