The 130-year-old Allegheny County Courthouse roof will be replaced as part of a $10 million project.
Work has begun by Cuddy Roofing Co. Inc., a Scalo-owned company. It’s part of the master restoration plan at the courthouse, and its first phase is expected to be completed by spring 2019, according to a news release from the county.
The first phase of the master roof restoration plan includes repointing masonry on the building’s three towers; the second phase will replace the entire remaining roof.
During both phases, about 450,000 original terra cotta clay roof tiles will be removed and replaced using the same material, using exact standards and sizing by Ludowici Tile of New Lexington, Ohio, according to the release.
The finished roof will be distinctly brighter, as the old tiles have been blackened by soot from the city’s industrial past.
The tiles for the French Renaissance roof will be delivered only on weekends to minimize traffic impact, the release said.
With a 60-degree slope, 100-feet in the air, replacing the tiles will be a challenge, said Chaz McNulty, president of Cuddy Roofing.
