Grasshopper

Grasshoppers are a group of insects belonging to the suborder Caelifera. They are among what is probably the most ancient living group of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early Triassic around 250 million years ago.Grasshoppers are typically ground-dwelling insects with powerful hind legs which allow them to escape from threats by leaping vigorously. As hemimetabolous insects, they do not undergo complete metamorphosis; they hatch from an egg into a nymph or “hopper” which undergoes five moults, becoming more similar to the adult insect at each developmental stage. At high population densities and under certain environmental conditions, some grasshopper species can change color and behavior and form swarms. Under these circumstances, they are known as locusts,More info:wiki

Grasshopper swarms in and around Albuquerque are so thick they are appearing on National Weather Service forecast radar.

“At first, there was some question about what it was,” said David Craft, a meteorologist with the NWS office in Albuquerque, who said the swarms started appearing around Memorial Day.

Friday, meteorologists determined the mysterious objects were the grasshoppers residents had seen for weeks around town.

Unlike precipitation, the swarms of grasshoppers did not have clean edges and showed up for hours at a time on the radar, Craft said.

“Showers and thunderstorms come up and go down. They don’t last long,” Craft said.

Although grasshoppers are native to the region, an outbreak of this magnitude hasn’t appeared in 20 years, said Paul Smith, manager of the urban biology division at the Albuquerque Environmental Health Department.

The beauty of this grasshopper is breath-taking, but it should not be taken lightly. Often bright colours in nature are used to show danger and this little insect is no different. Bright colouration is called aposomatic colouration and it will let any potential predator know that it is poisonous. Aposomatic colouration is not often used in mammals, but insects in particular use colours for protection as their predators, such as birds and other insects, have colour vision.

#7    The Verge Review of Animals: the pink grasshopper,More info:theverge

This column is part of a series where Verge staffers post highly subjective reviews of animals. Previously, we’ve written about animals without telling you whether they suck or rule. We are now rectifying this oversight.

Mostly in the last couple of years, pink meadow grasshoppers (Chorthippus parallelus) have been sighted by adventurous children in the Belfast hills and Japan. National Geographic‘s headline was “No, it’s not a cocktail” apparently to provide clarification for all those who go on the National Geographic website looking for vintage cocktail recipes. Other headlines were like “No, it’s not spraypaint” and “They were tickled pink.” Please take a minute to compliment me on my non-sensationalist headline.

#6     Grasshoppers and crickets,More info:saga

These wonderful creatures have always amazed me with the ability that some have to jump huge distances and most have to create their ‘song’.

Grasshoppers and crickets belong to the order of insects known as ‘Orthoptera’. Around the world there are over seventeen thousand different species of Orthoptera of which just thirty occur in Britain, these are split into the two families known as grasshoppers and crickets. These two families can be distinguished from each other by the way in which they make their song, the time of day during which they are active, some of their physical features and their diet.

Most of these insects are small and well camouflaged so they have developed a range of sounds with which to attract a mate. Their ‘song’ must be familiar to us all but they don’t create it through their mouth parts instead they rub two parts of their body together, a process known as stridulation, and though different species rub different body parts the effect is the same. One of the two surfaces has a row of ‘teeth’, known as stridulatory pegs, the other surface is stiff and the effect is like that of running your finger nail along a comb.
