#9 SOUTHERN ROCK LEGEND GREGG ALLMAN DIES AT 69,More info:maxim
Gregg Allman, who with brother Duane founded the iconic Allman Brothers Band, died Saturday. The guitarist, singer, and songwriter was 69 years old.
The hits the Allmans turned out created a signature sound that many have imitated but few have come close to equaling. With classics like “Melissa,” “Whipping Post,” and “Midnight Rider,” the Allmans totally defined southern rock as a separate genre.
A statement on Allman’s website announced his death, stating he’d “passed away peacefully” at his Savannah, Georgia residence. “Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years,” the statement read, most likely referencing his battle with hepatitis C, which resulted in a liver transplant in 2010.
“During that time,” the death announcement continued, “Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul.”

Music legend Gregg Allman, whose bluesy vocals and soulful touch on the Hammond B-3 organ helped propel the Allman Brothers Band to superstardom and spawn Southern rock, died Saturday, a publicist said. He was 69.
Allman died at his home in Savannah, Georgia, publicist Ken Weinstein said. A statement on the singer’s website says he “passed away peacefully.”
Allman had cancelled some 2016 tour dates, announcing on Aug. 5 that he was “under his doctor’s care at the Mayo Clinic” due to “serious health issues.” Later that year, he canceled more dates, citing a throat injury. And in March 2017, he canceled performances for the rest of the year.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, the rock star known for his long blond hair was raised in Florida by a single mother after his father was shot to death. Allman idolized his older brother, Duane, eventually joining a series of bands with him. Together they formed the nucleus of The Allman Brothers Band.
The original band featured extended jams, tight guitar harmonies by Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, rhythms from a pair of drummers and the smoky blues inflected voice of Gregg Allman. Songs such as “Whipping Post,” ”Ramblin’ Man” and “Midnight Rider,” helped define what came to be known as Southern rock and opened the doors for such stars as Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band.

The question “Can white men sing the blues?” has been debated for decades, especially once earnest white kids began taking a crack at the music in the 1960s. But in the case of Gregg Allman, no one ever raised the question. It wasn’t simply a matter of his husky, often pained voice and the genuine sense of despair, desperation and boastfulness conveyed by it.
It was also a reflection of the tragedy that haunted Allman’s life, from the murder of his father when Gregg was two years old to the motorcycle accidents that took the lives of his brother Duane and Allman Brothers Band member Berry Oakley a year apart in the 1970s.
Add in the impact of fame, celebrity, chemical temptations and divorces, especially with dealing with a relatively shy person like Allman, and he more than earned his right to sing the blues. “You’ve got to consider why anybody wants to become a musician anyway,” Allman told Rolling Stone in 1973. “I played for peace of mind.” Here are some of those moments, where Allman hopefully did alleviate his inner burdens with song.
