Hi there, thanks for checking out my post of some of the awesome places in the world. Some of these I’ve been to and some I hope to get to see for myself one day. This one ties into my other post on Chichen Itza. If you happen to be going to Chichen Itza, then there’s no reason you should miss out on this incredible spot. Cenote Ik Kil, is not far from the Mayan temple complex and when my Father and I took our trip there, we got to make a pit stop at Cenote for a swim. You can go down into this massive hole in the ground and swim in the fresh water pool thats inside, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Cenote is a relic in itself of the ancient Mayan culture. It’s about 60 meters across and 35 meters deep. Cenote means well, and Ik Kil means offering, from there you can probably guess what the Mayans used this place for. In ancient times the Mayans would use this place as a source of fresh water, as well as other similar sites in the area. There are no major rivers that come through this area so the Mayans saw these freshwater pits as something of a godsend. They would regularly give offerings to the gods by throwing valuable artifacts into the pits, as well as young girls. As their only source of fresh water I guess they didn’t want to take any chances.

Ik Kil Cenote is a natural sinkhole located in the Yucatan, Mexico. It is not only a beautiful spot for swimmers but some of the most breathtaking photos have been taken there.

What is a Cenote

The word ‘cenote’ comes from the Mayans. It means “ts’onot” or “dzonot” which stands for “sacred well.” A natural phenomenon, a cenote is actually a sinkhole. There are more than 7,000 of these in the Yucatan Peninsula alone and this is because of the land there being a porous limestone. These cenotes are formed when the rainfall, over millions of years, wore down the limestone, creating caverns and caves. Once these water tables were formed, sometimes the roof would collapse and what you get is the cenote.

Each one is unique and can have a large opening at the top or even a tiny one that is barely visible. The other unique feature is that they can contain different types of water, depending on each cenote. There is no set rule in whether the cenote has saltwater, freshwater, or a combination of both.
