I first became interested in firework photography when I went to the display at Thamesday in London (opposite where the London Eye is now situated). My first image was successful and I’ve carried on from there.
When shooting fireworks, I use a tripod with the bulb setting, a fairly low ISO and a fairly small aperture. However, I have been known to use automatic and hand held, too, as it isn’t always easy to set up a tripod somewhere as busy as the London NYE fireworks.

Tis the season. Summers are often filled with relaxing, beach fronts, vacations, and of course fireworks. With Independence Day fast approaching, we’re getting calls and emails inquiring about how to photograph those annual fireworks displays properly. The conditions, from a photography standpoint, are always a little bit of a challenge – dark environments, fast moving objects, and plenty of additional variables. When done incorrectly, you’re left with blurry, grainy, and uninteresting photos. But when done correctly, you can capture the spectacular moments in all their glory.
We’ve talked about putting together a piece on fireworks for a few years here at Lensrentals.com, but never found the time to do one, since by the time we capture the photos we need for the piece, the Fourth of July has already come and gone. So with some planning this year, we were able to get the photos we need, and put together a piece to better help you capture those pictures you have such a limited time capturing.

Once you know how to get the best possible fireworks shots, you can work some magic on your computer.
I love to shoot the fireworks displays each 4th of July and I have learned by experience how to get the kind of images I like. But I have found that if I shoot the grand finale, with many bursts going off in rapid succession, I get a jumbled mess with too much going on, overexposure where several bursts overlap, and too much smoke.
Instead, I use a focal length that will let me shoot individual bursts or just a few bursts together, early in the show before too much smoke is in the air, and build my own composites of these individual bursts. The result is a very clean image, with the bursts arranged just the way I want them.
