After winning the Tony Award in 2010 for playing the lead character, Troy, in August Wilson’s Pulitzer winning play, Fences, Denzel Washington reprises the role in the play’s film adaptation, which he also directed. Troy was a great baseball player in his youth, but now he works as a garbage collector. Convinced that his skin color is an obstacle to his career advancement, Troy vents his bitterness and frustration on his loved-ones, jeopardizing his son Cory’s dream to become a football player and cheating on his wife, Rose (played by Golden Globe nominee Viola Davis) with another woman.

One of my favorite verses of the Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Powerful words, aren’t they? Anglophenia’s Sharon Carpenter hit the red carpet at a New York City screening of the new movie Fences. The film, which is currently in theaters, is based on the 1983 play by the late August Wilson and follows the struggles of an African American father and his family in 1950s America.
Sharon touched base with the cast, including the film’s director and male lead Denzel Washington, about BAFTA’s recent decision to introduce a diversity rule. Beginning in 2019, if a movie isn’t deemed diverse enough, it won’t qualify for two of BAFTA’s most prestigious awards: Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.
As explained in the below interview, Washington is clearly honored to take on the responsibility of producing Fences — and eventually Wilson’s back catalogue of nine other plays — believing it will create opportunities for young actors.
