Deer

Deer are the hoofed ruminant mammals forming the family Cervidae. The two main groups are the Cervinae, including the muntjac, the elk , the fallow deer and the chital, and the Capreolinae, including the reindeer , the roe deer and the moose. Female reindeer, and male deer of all species except the Chinese water deer, grow and shed new antlers each year. In this they differ from permanently horned antelope, which are part of a different family  within the same order of even-toed ungulates ,more info:wiki

Without question, the whitetail deer is the most pursued big game species within our provincial boundaries. Wide spread populations, vast habitats and promising hunting opportunities have all been attributed to elevating their pronounced popularity. They inhabit a wide variety of complex environments that range from the sporadic bluffs of our southern prairies to the dense forests of our remote central landscapes. Manitoba’s whitetail offers one of the most diverse hunting experiences available and is well known for producing massive dark antlers and often tipping the scales at 250 pounds.

#9         Red deer came to Scottish islands from unexpected places, more info:sciencemag

Stone Age seafarers may have transported red deer to far-flung Scottish islands from remote sites in Europe rather than from the Scottish mainland nearby, a new study suggests. Although researchers have long suspected the creatures had been brought to the remote isles by humans to provide a steady supply of food, antlers, or skins, the notion they originated in distant lands and were carried there in a sort of Neolithic ark is a surprising twist.

Red deer (Cervus elaphus) are one of the most widespread large mammals in Europe today, missing only from Iceland and northern Scandinavia. Each deer can grow up to twice the weight of North America’s white-tailed deer, and the animals now number between 360,000 and 400,000 in Scotland alone, says David Stanton, an evolutionary biologist at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. Remains unearthed at many archaeological sites throughout Scottish mainland and its islands suggest the deer have been an important source of meat, pelts, and bones for thousands of years. Their bones have even turned up in middens, or archaeological trash piles, dating back to at least 4500 years ago on Orkney, an island that lies about 16 kilometers off the northeastern coast of Scotland, and on the Outer Hebrides, a small archipelago located about 25 kilometers off the northwestern coast.

#6       Outdoors: Don’t shoot down current deer tag system, more info:argusleader

I anticipated a pressured sales pitch at a recent Game, Fish, & Parks meeting looking at deer tag application proposals, but the representatives were open-minded. There was no hard sell.

There will be no application changes for 2018, and those applications are now available with the first deadline being July 20 for Hills and West River Deer. If there are changes for 2019, they will only come after being hammered out at a regular meeting of our commissioners. Our input will continue to be welcomed.

We currently make separate applications for East River, West River, Black Hills and Muzzleloader deer tags, and we indicate first and second choices. Success in one season has no effect on other unit draws. Personally, I have been satisfied with the current system. In 2017, I bagged nice bucks in both East and West River units.  Granted, my drawing luck is affected by the desirability of the units I apply for.
