The Australian government announced that substantial progress has been made toward protecting the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Conservationists applaud improvements in the reef’s health and resilience, but caution that current government policies do far too little to counter global warming, which officials and scientists both agree is the greatest threat to the reef’s long-term survival.
As part of a March 2015 “Reef 2050 Plan” put forward to avoid the GBR losing its coveted World Heritage Site status, the federal government and the government of Queensland state, which borders much of the GBR, promised annual updates on the status of efforts to manage and protect the reef. Officials feared failure to protect the reef would seriously affect tourism and give the nation a black eye.

According to new research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the Great Barrier Reef, the most iconic coral reef of the world, is now moving south, away from the equator, due to ocean warming. However, scientists believe that the Great Barrier Reef will not “migrate” off the coast of Brisbane, so it won’t move south too far because other factors will slow it down.
As the researchers reported in the paper published in the before-mentioned scientific journal, fossil records showed that the Great Barrier Reef used to move south whenever the waters’ temperatures got too high due to ocean warming.

SALT LAKE CITY ― Scientists say there may be hope for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
What’s going on: According to New Scientist, lightly electrified steel frames are being placed over damaged sections of the reef about 100 kilometers north of Cairns, one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations.
The electric currents are said to aid in promoting coral regeneration, a process that can take more than 10 years for the reef to complete on its own.
The new technology, which has been reported as a successful way of reviving reefs in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, could help the destroyed coral grow up to three or four times faster than usual, reported New Scientist.
