Due to its stunning canal system and almost car-free town centre, the Dutch village of Giethoorn is commonly called ‘the Venice of the Netherlands’. Boats are the main mode of transportation in the village and it is easy enough to spend whole days exploring Giethoorn’s delightful waterways. However, there are many other attractions located along the village’s canals including a living museum and another institute dedicated to decorative shells.

I went to Giethoorn because a colleague who’d visited told me it was a “lovely little village”. The village website temptingly describes it as “quiet”, “serene” and “remote”, a place where the loudest sound is the “quacking of a duck”. I’m sure Geithoorn is wonderful under normal circumstances, but a sunny weekend in August is far from normal … at least I hope so for the sake of everyone who lives there.

There’s no doubting Giethoorn’s appeal. Beautiful wooden houses, with thatched roofs and perfectly manicured gardens, are built on dozens of narrow canals. There are no roads through the village and the only footpaths are too narrow to walk in anything other than single file. In the past, farmers moved their livestock by rowing them around in boats. As advertised, there are a lot of ducks, some of them even quack.

Giethoorn, in the Dutch province of Overijssel, is often called the “Venice of the Netherlands”, but unlike the Italian city of water, here are no streets and no modern transportation, just canals.

Anyone going to Giethoorn should leave their car outside the village and travel by boat. Usually by “whisper boat”, which has an electric, noiseless motor, because diesel engines are forbidden in this area.

Most houses in the village are located in small, private islands, which are connected by bridges. Lots of bridges. To be precise, there are more than 180 bridges in Giethoorn.
