The Stahl House (also known as Case Study House #22) is a modernist-styled house designed by architect Pierre Koenigin the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles, California, which is known as a frequent set location in American films. The Stahl House – Case Study House No. 22 designed by architect Pierre Koenig is arguably one of the most iconic homes in the US and if you didn’t think it was possible for this home to be even more beautiful, you’d be mistaken. The home recently got a major refresh thanks to Design Within Reach and now serves as the perfect backdrop for DWR’s newest collection of furniture, fixtures and accessories from an A+ list of designers including Norm Architects, Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman, Nathan Yong, Neil Logan, Note Design Studio and Ibon Arrizabalaga.

This weekend was my birthday milestone weekend. I turned 40 years young! Some people either dread it or embrace it. I choose to embrace it and slay it flawlessly! As a birthday gift to me, my husband surprised me by taking me to the Hollywood Hills to one of the most iconic architectural masterpieces in modern history, Case Study House #22 (aka the Stahl House). I’ve always had an interest in architecture and interior design. I don’t have a particular type I love (because I love it all!), but if I had to choose one it would be mid-century modern. I am a believer in “less is more”, clean lines and simplicity in all aspects of life. Years ago I read about Case Study Homes, which was an experimental residential architectural program sponsored by Arts & Architecture Magazine in 1945. Although the project was nationwide, majority of the Case Study Homes were built in California. This particular home was the one I had my eye on ever since I saw the dramatic black and white image of the house featuring two women lounging in the living room over the glowing LA metropolis. That iconic photo was taken by architecture photographer, Julius Shulman, and part of the Stahl House fame is largely due to his image. It was always a dream of mine to visit the Stahl House and re-create Shulman’s famous image (you can see below). My husband knew the Stahl House is my dream home and so this was definitely a dream come true!

Here, Bruce Stahl reflects on childhood in a modernist icon, one of the most famous “Case Study” homes in Los Angeles. Decades after roller skating across the cantilevered concrete floors designed by midcentury architect Pierre Koenig, Stahl and his sister Shari Stahl-Gronwald still own the architectural masterpiece. Recently, the Stahl House formed a partnership with Design Within Reach to furnish the house and collaborate on programming.
“It all started with my parents’ dream and their search for an architect who was willing to take on the project. They purchased a lot up in the Hollywood Hills. My dad built the scale model of what he wanted. They interviewed three architects. The first two turned him down and said what they wanted was unbuildable on the lot that they had. The third architect was Pierre Koenig. And the way my parents found Pierre? There was a Sunday pictorial section on him in a local newspaper and they thought he would be a good fit for what they were doing.

A few weeks ago, Claudia and I ventured to the Stahl House, #22 of the Case Study houses, in Hollywood Hills for their sunset tour. I remember going to Chelsey Koenig’s home (the Architect, Pierre Koenig’s, granddaughter) a few years ago to work on our USC project and seeing piles of books about this stunning home in their living room. It certainly sparked some interest for me to visit. And after seeing some gorgeous photos of it on Alice Gao’s blog, I reserved a sunset tour for two for April. My +1/photographer was Claudia. The catch? mobile photography only. Yes, everything was off our iphones.
Buck Stahl, the client, purchased this lot for $13,000 in 1954, he yearned to create a modernist glass and steel constructed house that offered panoramic views of Los Angeles, but was rejected architects twice who told them that his dream home couldn’t be built. But by 1957, Pierre Koenig told him that it was possible, and Buck Stahl hired Koenig to take over the design.

This legendary Los Angeles home is the dream of Buck and Carlotta Stahl. With the help of architect Pierre Koenig they came together to create a mid-century modern masterpiece. The house is still owned by the family today. This home was later immortalized by the great architectural photographer Julius Shulman in 1960. Those photos have been viewed by millions of people throughout the world.

The meeting of the Stahl House and The Modern Christmas Tree was documented in a recent photo shoot. The photographs were unveiled on display at the Los Angeles Convention Center at the Dwell on Design show. They are now available to the public on our web site below.

In January 1945, Los Angeles publication Arts + Architecture announced the Case Study House program, with the goal to create and promote cutting-edge—and accessible—home design models in anticipation of returning American G.I.s, and with them, the need for good residential housing that could be produced on a mass scale.
