The middle floor of the Permanent Exhibition examines the wartime evolution of Nazi policy towards the Jews, from persecution to mass murder. As Germany expanded its territory across Europe, Nazi officials segregated Europe’s Jews from the rest of the population through laws, special markings, and relocation to ghettos.

In 1941, with the invasion of the Soviet Union, Germany embarked on the path of genocide, the physical annihilation of an entire people—which the Nazis euphemistically termed the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question.” When World War II ended in 1945, the Nazis and their collaborators had killed some six million Jews in Europe, representing two-thirds of the Jewish population in prewar Europe. An audio theater on this floor presents the testimony of Holocaust survivors in Voices of Auschwitz.

Washington, D.C. | February, 2017 – Located just off the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) is a research center and memorial, as well as a powerful and well presented collection of artifacts, documents, photographs, films, and audio recordings about the Holocaust. The museum’s 500-seat Meyerhoff Theater is a beautiful venue for lectures, meetings, speeches, and documentary films, but its old sound system was woefully inadequate. To design a new system that would fully meet the theater’s needs, museum management turned to Steve Haas, founder and president of SH Acoustics. Haas specified a system based on Renkus-Heinz Iconyx-series loudspeakers.

WASHINGTON (RFE/RL) — An elderly man walked into the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and opened fire on security guards, fatally wounding one before two guards returned fire.

Both the assailant and his victim, who was identified as 39-year-old Stephen Johns, were taken to the hospital in serious condition. The wounded guard died a few hours after the attack, according to law enforcement officials.

The U.S. Park Police said the gunman walked into the museum on June 10 carrying a “long gun,” and fired on a guard, before being shot by other guards. A law enforcement source said the gunman was shot in the face.

The U.S. Holocaust Museum is near the National Mall in Washington and is one of the capital’s most popular tourist attractions. At the time of the shooting, the museum was full, with about 2,000 visitors inside, according to the museum’s director, William Parsons.
