#8         SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING,More info:som

As the centerpiece of San Francisco International Airport’s expansion project, the International Terminal has become a striking symbol of the city and the West Coast’s gateway to the Pacific Rim. The five-story structure represents a watershed in the integration of structural and architectural design and a model for other urban airports with limited developable land.

The main ticketing hall was inspired by the great railway stations of Europe. To minimize obstructions in the hall, which sits astride the airport’s main access roadways, SOM employed a series of double-cantilevered trusses linked by bowstring trusses. The aesthetic, proportioning, and profile of the main truss were continually refined throughout the design phases to achieve a maximum integration of form and economy. The result was the creation of a wing-like form, modeled after the famed 19th-century Firth of Forth Bridge, which directly expresses the structural diagram of its bending forces.

What Terminal Do I Need?

Terminal 1 could be considered the main terminal. You’ll find most domestic flights run through Terminal 1 including Air Tran Airways, Alaska, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and US Airways. Terminal 2 provides air service from American Airlines and the customer-service loved Virgin America from Sir Richard Branson. Terminal 3 is where United flies out of. The International Terminal is for all international arrivals / departures together with U.S.A. service from Jet Blue and Sun Country.

MarketPlace Development, together with local partner Reininga Corporation of San Francisco, was selected by the San Francisco Airport Commission in December 1998 to manage the tenant outreach, leasing, and construction management for over 40,000 square feet for food and beverage locations in San Francisco International Airport’s New International Terminal.

The Airport’s goal for the food and beverage locations was to create a strong program that reflected the character of San Francisco through the inclusion of local and regional concepts with a strong emphasis on participation by San Francisco businesses and by Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprises. The plan features an array of food and beverage facilities including two large pre-security food courts, three food clusters, and five casual dining and bar facilities.
