#6 HIVE at National Building Museum by Studio Gang: #WalkWithLocals Meetup,More info:adammason
After living in Washington DC for 4 years now, I’ve learned there are just so many things to enjoy. From the food, the sights, and the people, it’s an incredible place. The new Hive by Studio Gang at the National Building Museum in Washington DC, is no exception.
Last week I attended my first #WalkWithLocals Instagram meet-up at the new Hive Installation at the National Building Museum. It was incredible and here were a ton of great people there.
Every summer, the National Building Museum has a really cool interactive exhibit that you can enjoy. The first year I went was the BEACH installation which was a ton of white plastic balls to simulate a beach. Last year, it was the ICEBERGS exhibit which was giant pieces to give you the experience of swimming both under icebergs and viewing them from above.

Snarkitecture is back at it again with the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., with big plans for a brand new, large-scale, interactive exhibition. According to the National Building Museum website, this will be Snarkitecture’s first comprehensive museum exhibition, which will run from July 4 through September 3.
The exhibition, called Fun House, is part of the annual Summer Block Party event that the museum has organized for several years now. Past events have included Studio Gang’s Hive, James Corner Field Operations’s ICEBERGS, and Bjarke Ingels Group’s (BIG) BIG Maze. Snarkitecture has also created an interactive, summer exhibition for the museum before, known as THE BEACH, which welcomed over 180,000 visitors.

A giant pit of a million plastic balls has taken over the National Building Museum in Washington DC, creating a synthetic seaside inside the 19th-century building’s Great Hall.
The Beach, designed by New York-based practice Snarkitecture, spreads across a 10,000 sq ft space in the former US Pension Bureau HQ – conceived by army officer and architect Montgomery C Meigs.
A walled mirror gives the impression of an endless ‘ocean’ while a 50-ft-wide shoreline is sprinkled with beach chairs and parasols to replicate the experience of visiting a real beach. Gallery-goers can plunge into the plastic ‘water’ or lounge around, soaking up the architecture.

For many art and design institutions, the summer months tend to be sleepy ones, allowing staff to set the stage for blockbuster exhibitions opening in the fall. But this does not hold true for Washington, D.C.’s National Building Museum, which wows with large-scale, immersive summer shows that in recent years have included an indoor “ocean” of nearly one million transparent balls, a series of architect-made minigolf courses, and a BIG-designed maze. And this year is no different. Now on view in the museum’s Great Hall is the installation Icebergs, a mammoth interpretation of a glacial ice field that offers a respite from the city’s sweltering summer heat.

It’s happening again. Hill Country’s popular outdoor pop-up, the Backyard Barbecue, will return to the lawn of the National Building Museum this summer.
The pop-up will kick off May 1. Specific details are still to come, but there will be barbecue menu items, Shiner beer, live music and more. The event will run through Labor Day weekend. There were several cocktails available last year, and menu items like brisket sandwiches.
The event runs Thursdays-Saturdays during the warmer months. People can also book the venue for private events like rehearsal dinners and corporate parties. The hours have changed, though – the event will run from 4-9 p.m.
