The Art Institute of Chicago is an architectural artifact that represents Chicago’s rich history of educating young artists and serves as a reminder of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893.

While it bears the marks of historic Beaux Arts architecture, today it sits as a house of contemporary scholarship of art across the globe.

The World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 was a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in North America. But many in Chicago saw it as a coming-out party for the city. They were thrilled to host the exposition as a way of displaying the city’s triumphant rebirth after the Great Chicago Fire 1871.

The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) has postponed its forthcoming exhibition of Native American pottery from the Southwestern United States over concerns that indigenous people were not sufficiently represented in the exhibition. The show, “Worlds Within: Mimbres Pottery of the Ancient Southwest,” had been scheduled to open on May 26th and showcase about 70 objects dating from around 1100 C.E. However, during a “scholars day” held by the exhibition’s organizers for Native American scholars and representatives, participants raised concerns about the artifacts in the show.

Tomorrow, the inaugural edition of Midwinter debuts at the Art Institute of Chicago. Curated by Pitchfork, the three-day event will host artists including Deerhunter, Kamasi Washington, Laurie Anderson, Perfume Genius and Oneohtrix Point Never for performances across multiple venues within the world-class museum.

Adam Krefman, Senior Director, Festivals & Activations at Pitchfork, who also programs the brand’s well-known summer music festival, tells Pollstar that booking Midwinter has been refreshing. “It’s somewhat liberating,” he says. “It’s nice to not be thinking about headliners for six months and just be booking really interesting shit.”

That so-called “interesting shit” extends beyond the names of the event’s bill. Several of the artists performing at Midwinter designed “soundscapes,” unique music inspired by specific pieces in the Art Institute’s collection. Krefman says he’s most excited for Nico Muhly, the classical composer who has collaborated with artists including Yoko Ono and Father John Misty. Muhly’s piece, titled “Étretat Cycles,” takes inspiration from two Claude Monet paintings in the museum’s “iconic” Impressionist gallery, which is where he will appear.
