Carving | Art techniques materials
Carving is the act of using tools to shape something from a material by scraping away portions of that material. The technique can be applied to any material that is solid enough to hold a form even when pieces have been removed from it, and yet soft enough for portions to be scraped away with available tools. Carving, as a means for making sculpture, is distinct from methods using soft and malleable materials like clay, fruit, and melted glass, which may be shaped into the desired forms while soft and then harden into that form. Carving tends to require much more work than methods using malleable materials,More info:wiki

The Carved Fan in Furniture
Carvings found on 18th furniture are sometimes an ostentatious display of vines and leaves which cover nearly every exposed surface of the chair or chest to which they’re applied. I’ve always had a greater appreciation for minimal amounts of carving that accentuate a furniture piece rather than dominate it. In my mind, a carving should become part of the overall design. Carved feet, finials, table edges or drawer fronts all add a small degree of embellishment without overwhelming the rest of the piece.
One of my favorite carvings has always been the simple fan (Photo 1). New England craftsmen of the 18th century obviously liked it too. Judging by a study of the antiques of the period, the fan was perhaps the most commonly used carved element. There were a number of design variations; some were even a 360 degree pinwheel. And in fact, some Boston chests feature a carving of a virtual folding paper fan complete with the sticks and paper folds (Photo 2).

The Tibetan tradition of woodcarving dates back to the seventh century, commonly appearing in the crossbeams of houses, door and window frames, as well as in furniture. Like other Tibetan arts, the motifs used are often iconic, following a standard representation. Various types of flowers, mountains, clouds, and other elements in nature, as well as religious symbols, all have a style in which they must be drawn, and so becoming an expert carver means mastering a vast repertoire of motifs and designs.
Although woodcarving is not a religious art, because Tibetan culture is so linked with Buddhism, many of the popular motifs do have a religious significance. Among the most common symbols to be carved are the Tashi Targye, or Eight Auspicious Symbols. These are also the first designs that any beginning student learns to make.
