Aquatint is an intaglio printmaking technique, a variant of etching that only produces areas of tone rather than lines. For this reason it has mostly been used in conjunction with etching, to give outlines.It has also been used historically to achieve prints in colour, both by printing with multiple plates in different colours, and by making monochrome prints that were then hand-coloured with watercolour,More info:wiki

We have a print of the John Bartram House in our conference room and thought we’d find out more about it. Says Bartram’s Garden curator Joel Fry, “This is an aquatint printed in 1913 by Frederick William Härer, a Bucks County/New Hope-area artist best known as a frame maker for the group of Pennsylvania impressionists. What hangs in the conference room is a modern inkjet print from a scan of the original print. However, we own three copies of the original print, and one of them still has the original printed folder that enclosed the print when sold in 1913.”

1812. A leaf from The History of the Abbey Church or St. Peter’s Westminster: Its Antiques and Monuments, by Rudolph Ackermann. In 1795 Ackermann set up a lithographic press and opened a business in copper lithographs. Ackermann was a creative and efficient publisher, who brought innovative techniques to the commercial production of color plate books as well as an uncompromising attention to detail which ensured uniform high quality. Print method is Engraving-Aquatint on India paper, measuring 343 x 278 mm. or approximately 13 1/2 x 11 inches. Archivally matted.
