Wolf

The wolf (Canis lupus), also known as the grey/gray wolf or timber wolf, is a canine native to the wilderness and remote areas of Eurasia and North America. It is the largest extant member of its family, with males averaging 43–45 kg (95–99 lb) and females 36–38.5 kg (79–85 lb). It is distinguished from other Canis species by its larger size and less pointed features, particularly on the ears and muzzle. Its winter fur is long and bushy and predominantly a mottled gray in color, although nearly pure white, red and brown to black also occur.Mammal Species of the World (3rd ed., 2005), a standard reference work in zoology, recognises 38 subspecies of C. lupus,More info:wiki

Right now the gray wolf is federally protected in Wisconsin. But a bill making its way through Congress aims to lift that protection here and throughout the lower 48 states.

Some people view the gray wolf as an important part of a functioning ecosystem. Others consider wolves a looming threat.

In the early 1900s, a bounty system was created in Wisconsin to drive down the number of wolves. By 1960, there wasn’t a wolf to be found on the state’s landscape.

In 1974, the newly-enacted Endangered Species Act took the gray wolf under its protective wing.

APPEARANCE

Gray wolves, also known as timber wolves, are the largest members of the canid family. Despite the word “gray,” they come in a variety of colors including almost black.

WOLVES IN THIS ECOSYSTEM

When European settlers first arrived in the western United States, they set out on a campaign to eliminate wolves. They were virtually eliminated from the greater Yellowstone ecosystem, which caused significant changes to the ecosystem structure and animal populations. Wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1995 from Canada.

#5   U.S. moves to lift remaining gray wolf protections,More info:mprnews

Gray wolves in the U.S. would be stripped of federal protection and subject to hunting and trapping in more states under a proposal released Thursday that declares the predators recovered following a decades-long restoration effort.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to revoke the wolves’ endangered and threatened species status and put them under authority of state wildlife agencies across the Lower 48 states. The Associated Press reported last week that the proposal was in the works.

Wildlife advocates and some members of Congress said the move is premature because wolves occupy only a fraction of a historical range that once stretched across most of North America.
