Wadden Sea | Most Wonderful Nature

UNESCO describes the Wadden Sea as “the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world.” In other words, it’s a surreal hinterland along the coast of Germany and the Netherlands that combines wide-open stretches of sand and shallow seas.
It’s also home to migratory birds. Go there and you’ll feel a million miles from anywhere else on earth and about as small as one of the clams at your feet. This 600-kilometer stretch of coast lies between the towns of Den Helder in the Netherlands and Niebull in Germany,More info:cnn

The Wadden Sea comprises the Dutch Wadden Sea Conservation Area and the German Wadden Sea National Parks of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. It is a large temperate, relatively flat coastal wetland environment, formed by the intricate interactions between physical and biological factors that have given rise to a multitude of transitional habitats with tidal channels, sandy shoals, sea-grass meadows, mussel beds, sandbars, mudflats, salt marshes, estuaries, beaches, and dunes. The inscribed site represents over 66% of the whole Wadden Sea and is home to numerous plant and animal species, including marine mammals such as the harbor seal, grey seal, and harbor porpoise. It is also a breeding and wintering area for up to 12 millions birds per annum and it supports more than 10 percent of 29 species. The site is one of the last remaining natural, large-scale, intertidal ecosystems where natural processes continue to function largely undisturbed.

The Frisian Islands, also called Wadden Sea Islands, form an archipelago in the North Sea, stretching all the way from the Netherlands to Denmark. They are divided into West, North, and East Frisian Islands. The biggest and most popular West Frisian island is Texel in the Netherlands, while among the North Frisian Islands, Sylt, Germany takes the first spot. The largest of the East Frisian Islands is called Borkum and belongs to Germany.

Because of their unique location, these islands form a mudflat region between the mainland and the North Sea. This is known as the Wadden Sea, an unbroken stretch of intertidal sandflats, mudflats and gullies stretching over an area over 300 miles. Its total area, including the terrestrial parts is almost 4,000 square miles.
