Most visitors view the canyon from South Rim viewing stations. Considering that it has taken the Colorado River the past 17 million years to carve this wonder out of rock, it seems only fair to take a closer look. Built by the National Park Service in 1924, the South Kaibab Trail takes you to the wonderfully named “Ooh Ah Point” and, for the adventurous, further into the canyon’s depths. Plan carefully, heat stroke is no fun.In the northwest corner of Arizona, visitors usually head to South Rim Village (120 kilometers northwest of Flagstaff on route 180) or the North Rim Village. The South Kaibab Trail is a hiking trail in Grand Canyon National Park, located in the U.S. state of Arizona. Unlike the Bright Angel Trail which also begins at the south rim of the Grand Canyon and leads to the Colorado River, the South Kaibab Trail follows a ridge out to Skeleton Point allowing for 360-degree views of the canyon.

Looking for a 3-mile, moderate day hike on a maintained trail but would rather skip the traffic on Bright Angel? Head down the South Kaibab Trail to the scenic precipice of Cedar Ridge. The sprawling view here includes the twisting path of the Bright Angle Trail as it descends into the canyon’s inner gorge through a section called the Devil’s Corkscrew.

Beginning at the popular South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the most popular starting point for Grand Canyon adventures, the South Kaibab Trail follows a ridge over to Skeleton Point allowing for multiple 360-degree vistas in the canyon. Water is not available along this trail, so make sure you bring plenty, and be prepared to go without a phone or campground until reaching the Bright Angel Campground 7.1 miles through the trail. Hazardous conditions can include risk of dehydration, unpredictable rainstorms with lightning, icy trails packed down by foot traffic, flash flooding due to sudden rain, rockfall, and extreme temperatures. Categorized as a strenuous hike despite the relatively short trail, the 7.1 mile distance from the Trailhead to the Bright Angel Campground may be too much for some, and there are no treated water sources or pay phones between the two points, but come prepared and this well-maintained trail may be one of your favorites.

The South Kaibab trail descends from the South Rim of Grand Canyon 7 miles and about 5,000 feet to the Colorado River then one of the two bridges allows foot traffic to cross to Bright Angel camp and Phantom Ranch.
