Unesco’s World Heritage Committee explains the enrollment of the West Norwegian Fjords i.a. by the classic, well developed fjords considered to be type locality (geologi) for the worlds fjord landscape. The area is believed to be among the most beautiful and scenic fjord landscapes in the world. The depth varies between 10 and 500 meters and the surrounding mountains are up to more than 1400 meters high. The 204 kilometer long Sognefjord, which the Nærøyfjord is a part of, is actually more than 1300 meter deep at the deepest.
Numerous wild and beautiful waterfalls and rivers characterize the landscape, crossing the rugged mountains and deciduous and coniferous forests on their way down to the fjords. Beautiful villages with a sustained cultivated landscape with remainders of old farms and mountain pastures and unique cultural monuments gives a extra dimension to the dramatic natural landscape. A heritage with a importance so high that we are obliged to look after this treasure for the future generations.

The West Norwegian fjords inscription consists of two fjord systems located 75 miles apart. My first new World Heritage Site visit in three and a half months started with a flight into Bergen and a drive several hours inland to the village of Aurland, located on the Nærøyfjord.
Fjords are one of nature’s greatest works of art, formed 10,000 years ago as melting glaciers carved their way through the rock. Up to 1,000 metres deep and as narrow as 250m at some points, the dramatic dimensions of these inland waterways gives them a majesty seen in few other parts of the world. Driving east from Bergen, each time the road emerged from one of the innumerable tunnels we were treated to a fresh view of this landscape.

Considered among the most beautiful fjord in the world, the Geirangerfjord will take your breath away with its peaceful waters, majestic mountains, amazing flora and magnificent waterfalls, including the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil. This 15-kilometre long fjord has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, jointly with Nærøyfjord, since 2005.
The village of Geiranger, situated in the innermost part of the fjord, is as idyllic a location as you can imagine, and halfway up the meandering road behind the village is a fabulous viewpoint at Hotel Utsikten Bellevue. In the summertime, a drive up to Dalsnibba with its hairpin turns promises some amazing views as well.

In West Norway, you find the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord stretching from Stavanger in the south to Andalsnes in the northeast in Norway’s western part. They are located 120 kilometres from one another easily recognisable as archetypical fjord landscapes.
The fjords unique features
Their exceptional natural beauty is derived from their narrow and steep-sided crystalline rock walls that rise to 1,400 m from the Norwegian Sea and extend 500 m below sea level.
The unique natural scenario overflows with one beautiful nature experience after another. The fjords’ sheer walls have numerous waterfalls, and free-flowing rivers cross their deciduous and coniferous forests to glacial lakes, glaciers, and rugged mountains.
The landscape features a range of supporting natural phenomena, both terrestrial and marine, such as submarine moraines and marine mammals.

The Geirangerfjord is one of Norway’s most popular natural attractions. The fjord is 260 metres deep while the surrounding mountains are 1600-1700 metres high. The fjord is also known for its spectacular waterfalls and deserted fjord farms high up on the steep cliffsides. The idyllic nature and the dramatic mountains will impress any visitor in the area.
The now deserted fjord farms tell the tales of a different time and way of life. You can visit some of the farms, such as Skageflå, Knivsflå, Blomberg, Matvik, Syltevik and Westerås.
You can spend the night at Westerås, sample the local food served at the outdoor restaurant, whilst enjoying the spectacular view of the fjord below.
