Willie Hugh Nelson (born April 29, 1933) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, author, poet, actor, and activist. The critical success of the album Shotgun Willie (1973), combined with the critical and commercial success of Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978), made Nelson one of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. Willie Nelson has been forced to cancel a number of concerts due to an undisclosed illness.
The news comes after the legendary performer’s show on Saturday (Jan. 6) at the Harrah’s Resort SoCal was cut short. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, Nelson kicked off his show with the song “Whiskey River” and abruptly ended his performance after the opening number. The 84-year-old was reportedly coughing and experiencing difficultly breathing when he left the stage.
Nelson’s longtime publicist told the publication that the singer came down with “a bad cold or the flu” and that he was heading back to Texas to recover.
To allow the singer time to heal, the rest of the shows scheduled for this week have been cancelled. Nelson is currently scheduled to resume touring on February 7 with a show at Macon, Georgia’s Macon City Auditorium.

Willie Nelson loves a tribute record. Over the course of his six-decade recording career, he’s released albums in honor of country singers Lefty Frizzell and Ray Price, songwriter Cindy Walker, and George and Ira Gershwin.
On Sept. 14, he’ll release “My Way,” a salute to the late, legendary crooner Frank Sinatra, on Legacy Recordings.
Nelson has been a longtime Sinatra admirer. The two performed at Las Vegas’ Golden Nugget in 1984 and also filmed a public service announcement about space technology. On Sinatra’s 1994 release “Duets II,” they sang “A Foggy Day” together.
